My first blog post: SO YOU SUCK AT CROCHET
Share
I've been debating how to kick off this blog for months now. Considering I'm not a blogger or a writer, I'm kind of interested to see where this will go. The current game plan is one post a month summarizing whatever I've been up to since you heard from me last.
That leads me to this moment, sitting on the couch, starting the actual blog. Doing the damn thing, if you will.
If you're reading this we probably met at a craft fair or vendor event. I love meeting people at events because it builds a cool sense of community among past and present makers. I've spoken with a substantial amount of people who have tried and quit crochet because they didn't have learning materials suited to their learning style. A lot of the reasons you may have thrown your yarn across the room in frustration can probably be traced back to how you learn... or who's teaching you!
If you're finding this blog while you're trying to decide if you should give up, you're in the right place. I probably gave up hundreds of times before completing my first project. The amount of hours I've spent frogging (pulling out stitches) far surpass the time I've spent finishing a perfect project. That's just part of making things. My first unsolicited advice for you: lean into the trial and error. Make it fun, be creative, and if you start being hard on yourself put the damn thing down for a few hours. Try again tomorrow, it'll still be there when your head has cleared up.
It's supposed to be fun. If you aren't enjoying it, give yourself a break. Then watch a tutorial. If that doesn't help, find a tutorial using a different method than the first person used. With a trial-and-error frame of mind failure becomes a learning experience.
I made a google sheet of tutorials that I watched while I was learning. The great thing about crochet is that there is no 'right' way to do anything. There are methods that help achieve different looks or tensions, but you can really tailor it to your preference. The videos that helped me may or may not help you– try a different method! You've got this. Probably :-P
See ya next month!
